The BBC has announced new over-75 TV licence schemes for the Isle of Man and Channel Islands.
The terms of the new schemes, which come online from 1st January 2021, are in broad alignment with that recently introduced in the UK and Northern Ireland on 1st August 2020.
Following a public consultation exercise - the feedback from which may or may not have been given any consideration at all - the BBC Board has decided that it will fund over-75 TV licences for those meeting the following criteria:
- In the Isle of Man, for those over-75s that qualify for Income Support.
- In Guernsey and Alderney, for those over-75s that qualify for Income Support;
- In Sark, for those over-75s in receipt of financial assistance from the Procureur of Sark;
- In Jersey, for those over-75s assessed as eligible for a free TV licence under the Jersey Government's 2006 means-tested TV licence benefit scheme.
The BBC estimates that the cost of funding the new schemes will be £425,000 per annum, plus additional implementation costs.
We remind readers in the Isle of Man and Channel Islands that there are many perfectly legal ways to enjoy your favourite programmes without a TV licence. Please see our earlier article for information about some of the most popular legally-licence-free ways of viewing.
