BBC Wimbledon Overkill

As regular viewers may already have noticed, the BBC's sports offering is absolutely woeful.

It is a damning indictment of how pathetic BBC Sport actually is that The Championships, Wimbledon - otherwise known simply as Wimbledon - takes pride of place in the BBC schedules every summer.

If you're one of the millions of viewers that can't stand tennis then it's just tough shit, because you'll probably find it on every BBC channel. This evening, as I type this very article, there is Wimbledon coverage on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Radio 5 Live.

With the advent of the BBC Red Button system, the national broadcaster has the ability to provide wall-to-wall Wimbledon coverage simultaneously from every court without interfering with normal schedules.

Why then does it arrogantly assume that every viewer wants to be inflicted with the most tedious and mundane of televisual tripe? Why infuriate tennis-loathing viewers even further by cancelling prime-time programming at the last minute and replacing it with yet more Wimbledon coverage? How many hundreds of overpaid BBC staff have been committed to Wimbledon this year?

Apologies to any Wimbledon fans out there!

  1. Agreed, although a thousand times less sinister than putting wim-football on at prime time incessantly, the winners of which were recently beaten by a 15-year-old boys side
