I am very excited to report that ITV crime drama Endeavour, the prequel to the much loved series Inspector Morse, returns to the airwaves tonight.
Apologies to readers for this slight deviation from normal service, but I don't see any harm in promoting a quality ITV drama that rivals the BBC.
Every time I watch Endeavour I am transfixed to the screen. I hang on every twist of the storyline. The clever way all the tiny clues weave together into the final outcome is truly remarkable. Viewers across the land are perched on the edge of the sofa trying to dissect each tiny nugget of evidence in the same analytical way as cerebral Detective Endeavour Morse and his old school boss Inspector Fred Thursday.
Game, the first of four episodes this series, is broadcast at 8 pm on ITV. If you have a valid TV licence then I'd encourage you to tune in then. If not, then you'll be able to catch it legally-licence-free on the ITV Hub shortly after broadcast.
Shaun Evans and Roger Allam reprise the leading roles of Morse and Thursday respectively.
The ITV Press Centre describes Game as follows:
______
The fourth series begins in the summer of 1967, barely a fortnight having passed since the events of the series 3 finale, and we find Oxford’s finest picking up the pieces of their lives, both personal and professional. Whilst Thursday and wife, Win, struggle to process the departure of both their daughter Joan and son, Sam, who has joined the army, Endeavour waits nervously to hear the result of his Sergeant’s exam.
Throwing himself into his work to mask the heartache of Joan leaving, Endeavour is quickly consumed by his duties with an array of new, perplexing cases landing on his desk.
The ‘white heat’ of technology takes centre stage in the first film, as Lovelace College is taken over by a team of research scientists who are developing a ‘thinking’ machine to equal and even outstrip the capabilities of man’s own mind.
As a Russian academic prepares to do battle with the Joint Computing Nexus (JCN or Jason for short) in a game of chess, the Cold War is played out on a chequered field and Endeavour and Thursday are plunged into their most perilous, baffling and darkly terrifying case to date.
Throwing himself into his work to mask the heartache of Joan’s departure, Endeavour is quickly consumed by his duties when one of the research team is found drowned near Magdalen Bridge. Assuming it to be a suicide on first inspection, the circumstances become more suspicious when two more victims are also found drowned nearby in East Cowley Baths. Is there more to the deaths than meets the eye?
______
It is 30 years since acclaimed crime drama Inspector Morse, starring the late John Thaw as the title character, first appeared on the small screen.
Russell Lewis, who wrote many of the original Morse episodes, has penned the gripping storylines to each of the new series 4 episodes - Game, Canticle, Lazaretto and Harvest.
The new series of Endeavour, in common with its forerunners, has been produced for ITV by Mammoth Screen.
Game, the first episode of Endeavour series 4, is broadcast tonight at 8 pm on ITV. I only hope ITV doesn't try to ruin it by cutting in ad breaks every 10 minutes like it did last time.
