Surrey Police was told that Jimmy Savile was a paedophile almost a decade before he was finally exposed, according to a report in today's Mail on Sunday.
The force has admitted that a journalist contacted them with concerns about the sexually-deviant presenter back in 2003, but they failed to act on that information.
The call came to light when police reviewed phone records last year, long after the former Top of the Pops presenter was unmasked as one of the nation's most prolific sexual predators.
At the beginning of 2013 the Metropolitan Police and NSPCC released a joint report chronicling the sexual crimes committed by Savile between 1955 and 2009. The report, called Giving Victims a Voice, revealed that no less than six different police investigations had taken place
into Savile's crimes, but none were able to bring him to
justice. Statistics about Savile's crimes can be found in our earlier post, but the number of new allegations is increasing all the time.
The Metropolitan Police received its first complaint against
Savile in the early 1980s, when he was accused of sexually abusing a
young girl in his camper van parked at BBC Television Centre. By that
time Savile had already committed literally hundreds of sexual offences, predominantly at BBC properties and hospitals.
Surrey Police previously admitted to interviewing Savile in 2007 over historic allegations of sexual abuse. The Crown Prosecution Service ruled that there was insufficient evidence to charge Savile on that occasion.
Savile's youngest victim was an 8 year old boy.
